IATA has established an outreach program for the airlines against swine influenza. The World Health Organization (WHO) has decided that airlines should pass on phase 5. Moreover, the airlines are undertaking for a pandemic awareness plan. However, IATA is working in partnership with WHO to realise the awareness program for the airlines in preparing guidance documents on the staff of airlines such as cabin crew, maintenance crew, cleaners team and baggage handlers. IATA awareness for airlines confirmed that airlines are already equipped for this kind of situation and the measures are already in place to ensure that passengers are safe. For instance, modern aircraft have systems such as air filtration similar to those in hospitals. However, airlines are regularly disinfected and the crews are trained in procedures for handling cases where the passengers could get sick on board of aircrafts. Moreover, the airlines had already put in place an awareness plan against avian influenza in order to efficiently handle the growing situation following the WHO recommendations.
